Publication obligation

There are various ways to fulfil the obligation to publish a dissertation. The respective study regulations and guidelines of the relevant faculty apply:

Depending on the faculty or department, monographic dissertations (TF, RF, partly KSF), cumulative dissertations consisting of an introduction and at least three essays (GMF Dr. sc., WF, VPF, partly KSF) or dissertations consisting of one essay (GMF Dr. med.) are common.

Cumulative diss.

Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine (GMF): Dr. sc.
The cumulative dissertation must be submitted in digital form.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (KSF)
Cumulative dissertations are permitted in the departments of Political Science, Religious Studies and Sociology. The cumulative dissertation must be submitted in digital form.

Faculty of Behavioral Sciences and Psychology (VPF)
The cumulative dissertation is submitted in digital form.

Faculty of Economics  and Management (WF)
The dissertation for publication is usually submitted in printed form (unbound).

    Diss. Dr. med.

The dissertation for the doctorate in medicine consists of only one essay. It is submitted in digital form.

    Monography

A monographic dissertation can be published in various ways:

    1. Publication of the dissertation in Open Access via a publisher: The dissertation can be funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation even if it is not part of an SNSF-funded project (more information). The additional distribution of printed copies via the book trade is also possible. The respective dean's office notifies the Open Science department of the ZHB of the DOI so that the dissertation can (additionally) be published on LORY.

    2. Publication of the dissertation as a fee-based e-book via a publisher: The respective dean's office reports the DOI to the Open Science department of the ZHB. The ZHB ensures that the e-book is included in its holdings.

    3. Publication of the dissertation as a fee-based printed book via a publisher: The respective dean's office submits three deposit copies to the ZHB, of which one copy is sent to the Swiss National Library, one is made available for loan from the ZHB and one is archived.

    4. Publication of the dissertation in Open Access directly via LORY: The publication obligation can be fulfilled via a first publication on the LORY repository.

    Consent

A consent form from the authors is required for the first publication of the dissertation.
